Love and Friendship

Love and Friendship
Love is like the wild rose briar,
Friendship is like the holly tree-
The holly is dark when the rose briar blooms
but which will bloom more constantly?

The wild rose briar is sweet in spring,
It's summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who will call the wild briar fair?

Then scorn the silly rose wreath now
And deck thee with the holly's sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He still may leave thy garland green

Emily Bronte
I am fortunate to have found both the rose and the holly. They grow from the same branch in my home. I hope each of you might do the same. The Herb Society - Rose

Opportunity

Opportunity

This I beheld or dreamed it in a dream,
There rose a cloud of dust along a plain.
And underneath that cloud or in it raged
A furious battle where men yelled,
And sword shocked upon sword and shield.
A prince's banner wavered,
Then staggered backwards hemmed by foes.

A craven hung along the battles edge and said,
"Had I a blade of keener steel,
That blue blade that the king's son bares;
...but this blunt thing."
And snapped and flung it from his hand
And lowering, crept away and left the battle field.

Then came the king's son, wounded, sore, bested and weaponless,
And saw the broken sword hilt buried in the dry and trodden sand,
And ran and snatched it up, and with battle shout lifted afresh
And hewed his enemy down, and saved a great cause that heroic day.

The Liberty Quote

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.
- Thomas Jefferson
Is this the often misquoted line from Mr. Jefferson that get's passed around every time the Patriot Act or Sobriety check points are debated? (FYI: I favor the former, oppose the latter.) Usually I hear something like: "I would rather have too much freedom than not enough" or "Those who would trade freedom for security deserve neither." It's usually attributed to anyone from Frankiln to Washington.

I need to research this a bit, I'd be interested to find what quotes follow this theme and how often they cross. Now I'm in the mood to pick up a couple David McCullough books. Regardless of the infrigements, this is a stirring quote that I plan to keep forward in my thoughts.

Now if you thought that was a good one, here's more wisdom from Mr. Jefferson:
I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies.

I do not take a single newspaper, nor read one a month, and I feel myself infinitely the happier for it.
