Back To Caching

Emma and I are back at it.  Geocaching in this weather doesn't take effort, just availability, which Emma and I had in droves.  It's so much fun to spend time with Emma these days.  The eight year old has passion, she WANTS to do fun things together and geocaching  is an activity we can agree on.  We found a few caches and checked up on a couple dad has hidden.  Quorra got out on he first geocaching adventrue too.  She loves being outside and rolling around in the stroller.  Emma loves pushing the stroller, so it all works out!

Dots Up And Running

My first new cache in years: "Dots" is now up and active. I've wanted to place a cache near my work for ages, but until recently there was another cache literally in our back yard that prevented me from placing another nearby. Now that cache has passed on so I took the opportunity to fill the geocache vacuum. Feel free to stop by, check it out, and wave to us inside the building! http://bit.ly/9GUpxv

Mothers Day

Mothers Day was a bit unusual for us. Mom had a wild hair and decided to try something new last week when @dimplsandcurls (otherwise known as my wife) hid her first geocache and did an outstanding job of it too. With what seemed like a fraction of the effort it takes me, Hannah had picked a spot void of caches, created a container, outfited the cache with prizes and was ready to go. She even logged a variety of waypoints with which to average out the coordinates. A short time later she had submitted and had her cache listing approved. The FTF (First To Find) was logged before Mother's Day was out.

I'm not sure it's fair for Dad to have as much fun as mom on Mother's Day, but these things happen when you go geocaching. Perhaps you'd care to visit Hannah's very own "Carrington Cache." Clink on the link to go to the cache listing. If you're already a geocacher, you'll be all ready to go. If you're not a geocacher, isn't time to start? Now really?

Geocaching Beckons

After a winter hiatus the call of the cache became too strong to ignore. Even an early March injury and illness could not stop me from picking up some easy caches. This time I even had my wife (@dimplsandcurls) on the trail for the first time in years along with lulu crew as usual. It was nice to knock out a few local caches first. One was practically in someone's front yard - a container location which previously had bothered me but now has me thinking about placing a cache near my home too. Don't know if I want to be bugged that much though. After two homestead caches like that, I had to consider it. Ill keep ya posted on that update.

The next week our trio hit the trail again in Kaysville and Layton. Having dimplsandcurls on the hunt has been so much fun - not only is she great company, but she has a good eye too and two heads are indeed better than one.

Rewarding Geocaching Adventure

Thanks to some kind team members at work I was able to get a day off to visit some family/friends for a big meetup and dinner in Springville, UT. I arrived early with my wife who was helping with some event details so I had time to burn, so with GPS in hand, I set out on a mini adventure for a few hours. After visiting a McDonalds (where I had the best Big Mac I've had in a decade) and tanking up for the afternoon we set off to scour the town for geocaches. The adventure became a bit of an ordeal after a few caches were either left uncared for and missing and others either far exceeded my skill or were also plundered. Out of 8 caches we sought, only 6 had containers to be found (we think) and we only actually found three of them. A bit discourageing but the fun is in the hunt afterall and we were treated to seeing a remarkable Presbyterian church in the middle of town as well as a relaxing wade though the chilled waters of Hobble Creek.

We also spent some time geocaching in Salt Lake City and in nearby Parley's Canyon. That was a very rewarding adventure. The caches up the canyon were just difficult enough to make reaching the goal rewarding without discouraging Emma (or myself.) Emma does a great job keeping up with dad and is usually excited to tag along. She did a great job taversing a hill with an extremely steep grade. Though she started out timid and clutching to dad for balance on the rocky and nealy 80 degree slope, she quickly learned that if she moved safely and with confidence her own balance system was superior to clinging to dad.

Even as great as dad is he isn't as cool as a playground when you've spent most of the day in the car. When I stopped to look for my last cache Mom stayed with Emma at a nearby park while I hiked off in the canyon below the interstate. I am still kicking myself for not encouraging Emma more strongly to follow me, becaseu I was treated to a grand experience when I poped up behind some weeds and startled some fawns a mere 100 feet in front of me. They ran to the brush and we spent a few minutes watching each other. Soon another fawn appeared in the opposite direction and let it's self get nearly as close before it realized the situation. It was a super cool experience and a great way to cap off another quick adventure spent geocaching.

Two Geocaching Adventures

In the not so distant past the family set out to find a few geocaches. One trip took us out to the palins of the Great Salt Lake. There were a few geocaches located North of the Airport that begged me to visit. We were lucky to have the airport using runways 34 so the traffic was taking off over our heads. We tried to work quickly becasue the area, though public land, is well patrolled by airport police (even considering they are usually accomodating, I would rather not have the meeting to begin with.) We embarked on another trip over the the Pioneer Day weekend seeking caches along East Canyon and the original Mormon Pioneer trail. The network of trails was beautiful with lush foliage and even a healthy amount of wildflowers. We didn't find as many geocaches on this trip, but we ended in the mood for more caching adventures (but that's another story.)

Geocaching The Shoreline

Our latest Geocaching expedition took us to the western reaches of Davis County, Utah. So far west, in fact, that we were as close to the Salt Lake shoreline as you can get on paved roads. Radio towers peered down on us from many places on the west side while cattle and horses greeted us to Emma's delight. (The high salt content of the surrounding soil makes for excellent grounding, so many stations place their transmitters here.) Our first cache of the day, Head West Young Lady, was placed by our long time friend Nate (rileyclod.) It was truly a great cache with a clever hiding place and a pleasant view. We lingered a while in the area and picked up another cache in West Syracuse then started trekking back to Layton where we collected two more caches. I had a goal to find five geocaches that weekend so the next day I traveled to West Bountiful to pick one more along an old rail bed. Good times while out caching this weekend, the favorable weather seems to be bringing us out more and more.

Caching In Cache County

Business took me to Logan, UT a week ago and any trip away from home spurs the urge to dig up a few geocaches. Sadly, out of four attempts, only one was fruitful. Emma and I did, however, see a good chunk of the Utah State University Campus and find a cache near the commemorative plaque at the gates of the University - not to mention grabbing a scoop of "Famous Aggie Ice Cream."

The cache we located, GCY92B (Anne Carroll Moore,) was a well created one inspired by the history of an early advocate of the then Utah State Agricultural College and it's library. Emma was thrilled to exchange goodies and we set free a Travel Bug we'd had for far too long.

The great thing about Geocaching is that it seems we have fun regardless of whether, or what we find.

Catching up on caching

Geocaching time has been a little thin lately but I have managed to grab a couple finds in the winter months. One, pictured above, was 'can you hear the music,' a micro cache .25 miles from SNA (Orange County Airport) in a business park. I think I stuck out like a sore thumb carrying about an oversize framed picture, wrapped in Disneyland shopping bags, which I was returning to SLC with. (I was in Orange County to drop Emma off with my parents for a Disney vacation.)

I managed to stay fairly inconspicuous (I think) and grabbed the find. The second find was almost at my back door where I work. 'Legacy' was a cleverly hidden micro that was fun to turn up on a cold January day.

Over The River, Over The Woods

The perrenial holiday visit to Grandma and Grandpa's took a twist this year. Emma didn't drive to the folks house, instead she was invited to spend a few days with Grammie & Gramps on their Disneyland vacation.

So dad took Emma down to SoCal on her first flight in a year. We met up with the grandparents in Santa Anna and Emma was whisked away to the land of Buzz Lightyear and Dumbo rides. Emma came home with many amazing stories (and a few souveniers) and dad got to spend a day flying, reading and Geocaching (three of his favorite things.)

The Day Dad Found 200 Geocaches

Ah yes, what a day that was. I had strived all summer to find my 200th Geocache before the weather turned. Finally I had a day off with the family and they endulged me in a hunt. We traveled far in search of new caches - and when we reached Sandy, we were rewarded with more than enough finds to meet the goal.

Another Three Cache Weekend

A weekend Geocaching expedition brings my total finds to 191 and more deeply engrains the joys of Geocaching for Emma who now asks to go Geocaching hourly. Mom came with us on this trip over trappers loop which turned out to be a fritful drive. Caches are relatively undisturbed along the route and the containers are particularly creative. I especially liked "loop d'loop" by UtahJean which took is a bit off the path and yielded some outstanding views.
