Las Vegas 1936

We've unearthed many treasures from family history this past year and I have felt compelled to share them.  It's funny how simple things like post cards can become treasures seventy eight years after their postmark.

This postcard pictures downtown Las Vegas, Fremont Street to be specific. It was postmarked May 15, 1936.  Bugsy Siegel won't open the Flamingo for another ten years and the Hoover Dam had just been completed the year before.  In fact, Douglas F. tells his Aunt Louise he plans to visit the new power plant:
Dear Aunt Louise
got here last night
all O.K. going
to the dam
and then on to
L.A. tonight
its to hot for me
here 102 last night
       Doug [sic]
Along with the photo, you may find interesting the one cent Benjamin Franklin stamp affixed to the card.  The card it's self is 5.5" x 3.5" (14 cm x 9 cm).  The mechanism that stamped the postmark was pronounced enough to have embossed the card.  You can see the post office circle from the front of the card (over the arch in the middle of the street).

I've been particularly fascinated with mementos from my Grandfathers life.  Of all my progenitors that I've had contact with, his story seems the most shrouded to me, due simply to the fact that he passed on when I was rather young, and the tangible links to him are much fewer than those to my Grandmother Wanda, for instance, whom I knew till I was 20.  Perhaps this seems mundane to you but the spirit of Elija is strong with me and I want to share it.

Emma And A Kidd

We're pretty lucky to have a neighbor who keeps several acres of property as a small farm.  For years we've reaped the benefits of being welcome to get up close with various animals ostensibly living in our back yard.  Several youth in the neighborhood have been given to opportunity to raise animals for 4H competitions while helping maintain the farm.

Emma is a frequent visitor to the farm and has forged a bond with animals of all sorts from rabbits to turkeys.  While on a visit with mom, Emma got the opportunity to get up close with a crippled little goat and take a turn feeding it.  She also got to meet a four day old buffalo calf who came to live at the farm.  The calf's owner was proudly inviting anyone who passed by to come visit with this unique adoption.  I have my bet that we'll be visiting again soon.

Back To Caching

Emma and I are back at it.  Geocaching in this weather doesn't take effort, just availability, which Emma and I had in droves.  It's so much fun to spend time with Emma these days.  The eight year old has passion, she WANTS to do fun things together and geocaching  is an activity we can agree on.  We found a few caches and checked up on a couple dad has hidden.  Quorra got out on he first geocaching adventrue too.  She loves being outside and rolling around in the stroller.  Emma loves pushing the stroller, so it all works out!

The Family Jewel

It was family picture day or as I have come to see it: Show Emma off day. Seriously, I'm not making these photos works of art - Emma is the pinch hitter in the batting order of beauty; The ringer in the competition of cuteness. Emma makes me look good - er.

But really that's the idea isn't it? I haven't changed much over the years, my friends aren't asking me to keep them up to date. We want to see how Emma has grown, and remember how adorable she was on that day in May back in ought-ten. And that's exactly what we did.

Geocaching Beckons

After a winter hiatus the call of the cache became too strong to ignore. Even an early March injury and illness could not stop me from picking up some easy caches. This time I even had my wife (@dimplsandcurls) on the trail for the first time in years along with lulu crew as usual. It was nice to knock out a few local caches first. One was practically in someone's front yard - a container location which previously had bothered me but now has me thinking about placing a cache near my home too. Don't know if I want to be bugged that much though. After two homestead caches like that, I had to consider it. Ill keep ya posted on that update.

The next week our trio hit the trail again in Kaysville and Layton. Having dimplsandcurls on the hunt has been so much fun - not only is she great company, but she has a good eye too and two heads are indeed better than one.
